Fire Installation

Fire Installation is a water installation that carries water only for fire fighting purposes. Fire, on the other hand, is the result of combustion reactions that occur as a result of the combination of matter with heat and oxygen.

The primary way to prevent or reduce the loss of life and damage that may arise from a fire is to eliminate the factors that may cause a fire.

Fire extinguishing systems can also prevent the start of a fire by reducing the amount of heat and oxygen required for the formation and continuation of the fire, and can extinguish a fire that has already started.

Fire Suppression Systems consist of three basic parts:

  • A large water tank, called fire storage tanks, in tanks located underground or at the top of the building

  • A specialized pumping system,

  • A large network of pipes ending in a hydrant or sprinkler (almost all buildings require both of these systems)

   What is Fire Hydrant?

  • A fire hydrant is a vertical steel pipe with an outlet near which two fire hoses are stored (a fire hydrant in America is called a standpipe). During a fire, firefighters will go to the exit, break the hoses, plug one in, and manually open the hose to let water flow out of the mouth. The amount of water and its speed is so great that it can knock over the fireman holding the hose if he doesn't stop correctly. As soon as the fireman opens the tap, water will gush out and sensors will detect the pressure drop in the system. This drop in pressure will trigger the fire pumps to turn on and start pumping water at a tremendous flow rate.

   What is Fire Sprinkler System?

  • A sprinkler is a nozzle connected to a network of pipes and placed just below the ceiling of a room. Each sprinkler has a small glass bulb with a liquid inside. This bulb normally blocks the flow of water. In a fire, the liquid inside the bulb heats up. It then expands and breaks the glass bulb, removing the obstruction and causing water to squirt from the sprinkler.

Difference Between Sprinkler System and Fire Hydrant

  • The main difference between a fire hydrant and a sprinkler system is that in a fire the sprinkler system is activated automatically whereas the fire hydrant is manually operated by trained firefighters (it cannot be operated by laymen). In the event of a fire, a sprinkler is usually activated very quickly, possibly even before the fire station is notified of the fire, and is very effective in extinguishing the fire in the early stages before it escalates into a major fire. For this reason, a sprinkler system is considered very good at extinguishing fires before they spread and become unmanageable. According to the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) of America, in a study conducted in the mid-1980s, hotels with sprinklers suffered 78% less property damage from fire than hotels without sprinklers.
